Nissan Skyline GT-R Broken Ceramic Turbocharger

I have been dealing with the Nissan Skyline GT-R for over 10 years now.  In that time, I have experienced a lot of highs and a lot of lows with the cars.  If you only watch the Option videos, the Best Motoring videos, you would have thought that the cars were indestructible.  This is far from true, as there are a lot of short comings, and issues that need to be addressed.  Here is one of them.

Broken stock ceramic exhaust wheel 54 grams
Damaged 2530 exhaust wheel 130 grams
 
The stock cars had this great idea, light weight ceramic exhaust turbine wheels.  The idea was great, not the first use of a ceramic turbine (I think the Buick GNX in 1987 was the first widespread use - 547 cars).  Nissan also used the ceramic wheels in some other special edition Nissans, but the R32 GT-R was the first widespread use.  From the R32, to R33, and R34, they all used ceramic exhaust wheels(expect Nismo, Nur, and a couple other "specials".)





The stock Nissan Skyline GT-R turbocharger has a ceramic exhaust (turbine) wheel. Detonate on the engine, or run too much boost, and they can snap off. R32,R33, and R34's all had ceramic exhaust wheels(standard and Vspec). There are a couple of models that had metal exhaust wheels. http://www.gtrusablog.com
All it takes is one good detonation event to break an exhaust wheel off.  Even hitting the rev limiter can be enough to break the brittle wheel off the turbo shaft.  The first time it really happened to me, I was on the Super Street Magazine tour to NOPI in Georgia.  Somewhere in Texas, I noticed I had a normally aspirated GT-R.  We had the guys at the shop overnight us a set of turbos, and a great set of guys out in Mississippi allowed us to use their shop to swap the turbos.  Normally aspirated, the GT-R sucks.  There are a lot of turbo options out there, and even thought a metal wheel is heavier, the fragility of the ceramic wheels makes me not able to recommend keeping them on any car you run hard.

haha yea they snap off real easy! I swapped mine for 2860R-5's, although I was in a friends GTS-T and he had just swapped in a RB25 turbo for his RB20... the exhaust wheel blew clean off and exploded shards of ceramic everywhere! lol

Why would Nissan go with the option of a ceramic wheels? Are there upsides like getting better compression/revolutions at a lower engine rev, or is it a purely due to weight?

It's got to do with response. Nissan - As I understand it... - wanted the GTR to be mainly focused on optimal response... steel wheels, although more durable, take a lot more energy to get spinning. so ceramic is used because they weigh a lot less and there for have a lower moment of inertia and can get spinning much sooner!

Do you see the pictures of the exhaust wheels that I posted?

The ceramic wheel is half the weight of a steel wheel.

1/2 the weight.
